The former New York Giants Wide Receiver, David Tyree, spoke to the New York Daily News stating:
“There’s nothing worth more than [maintaining heterosexual marriage] right here for me.”
Tyree then elaborated on his point. “Nothing means more to me than that my God would be honored,” Tyree said. “Being the fact that I firmly believe that God created and ordained marriage between a man and a woman, I believe that that’s something that should be fought for at all costs.
“So I’ll lay down everything I am to preserve the honor and integrity of the God that I serve.”
Tyree also expanded on his belief that same-sex marriage would represent the first step toward anarchy. “[O]nce you allow something like same-sex marriage, it opens up the door for a continual softening to the backbone of our society, which will eventually, for generations to come, open up the door for who knows, polygamy, and all other [things],” Tyree said.”
Tyree is so passionate about preventing gay marriage, he even suggested he would give up his Super Bowl winning catch to make that happen (if he could of course, build a time machine).
Let me remind you, David stated “….to preserve the honor and integrity of the God I serve”. Outside of my clear repulsion at his statement and his fantasy of taking back his winning play, wouldn’t you think he would use his celebrity, finances, and support, in a multitude of other areas such as: preventing child abuse, domestic violence, war, poverty, discrimination and injustice. Unfortunately those actions are not worthy of Mr Tyree to “…lay down everything I (he is) am…”
Yet then again, his ‘time machine’ fantasy would reverse his winning play, not stop Hitler from genocide, prevent war, advance our society, stop the first slave ships from sailing to the U.S.; heck why not even use the time machine to prevent the crucification of Christ. Wow, that would really make a difference in our world.
David not only shared his homophobic, rights limiting opinion with the New York Daily news, he also made a video for the National Organization of Marriage to promote his message.
Tyree is an interesting conundrum when looking at his high moral stance. According to Wikipedia: “Tyree battled with crack and alcohol addiction from an early age, and in 2004 was arrested for drug possession. Tyree reports that he has been sober after then-girlfriend Leilah became pregnant with their second child.”
After learning this revelation, I would suggest he use his ‘time machine’ to prevent his addiction, crime and family turmoil.
Do I sound bitter? Outraged? Sarcastic?
To me, that is a rational response to messages of hate, discrimination, and homophobia veiled under the guise of religion, moral fortitude and societal interest.
David Tyree does have some supporters outside of the NOM (which The Southern Poverty Law Center includes the National Organization of Marriage among the top 18 hate groups in the U.S. )….it is the white supremacist James Edwards. Edwards stated, “Even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then. While I might not agree with David Tyree on anything else, on this single issue, he is absolutely right.”
I hope that Mr. Tyree will direct his focus and energy on preserving his marriage, maintaining his sobriety, raising his children in the faith of his choice; and stay out of the rights, lives, and marital wishes of consenting gay adults.
Compassion, inclusion, empathy, and love are additional tenants of the Christian faith of which Mr. Tyree practices; these same tenants play a vital role in supporting human rights and equality in the here and now.
I choose to stand on the side of love.
